The Best Show... Ever 12月17日 WOW Madoff !!!
For those of you who haven't seen the news, venerable Wall Street veteran Bernard Madoff has been arrested for allegedly bilking customers out of a reported $50 billion in an elaborate Ponzi scheme. Mad Dog Madoff! Wow! I mean just WOW! How did this happen? Allegedly $50 billion in customer money just evaporated. Again I say WOW!! Is every person on Wall Street a crook? I mean this guy used to be the head of NASDAQ for goodness sakes! The Fed's move to a near zero percent stance was widely hailed on Wall Street yesterday, but I can't shake the feeling that all the Fed is doing is postponing the inevitable. Japan took its interest rates to near zero for years without little positive effect to its economy. Are USA making the same mistakes as the Japanese, or making brand new mistakes? In both cases, inflated real estate valuations caused massive losses among the financial institutions. But in Japan the banks refused to mark their assets to market to reflect their true value. This caused a wholesale loss of confidence in Japanese banks and has mired their stock market in a 20-year bear market. Here in the States, the banks have been marking their assets to market. They've been slow in revealing all of their troubled assets, but they haven't engaged in the blatant head burying that the Japanese are famous for. But by bailing out all of the banks, all the Fed has done is reinforce the culture of consequence-free risk taking. We need a new breed of banker. Where is the personal responsibility? Why haven't the management teams from these banks been fired and replaced? Where is the accountability in the system? Look at this guy Madoff. He allegedly robs $50 billion and yet he gets to be out on bail!! If a kid robs a liquor store for 200 bucks, chances are he doesn't get bail (and I am not saying he should). How does a guy who could potentially have stolen more money than anybody in history get granted bail? The inequality of our justice system never appeared more stark. We need fundamental and systematic change to take place or run the risk of fading into economic obscurity. We need a scorched earth policy when it comes to new financial regulation. This doesn't mean more paperwork. It means more actual oversight, more actual verification. How were Madoff's positions never verified by an outside source? Madoff operated under a rule that allows companies to not have to report positions held for less than a month. Small wonder then that his entire pitch was about a strategy involving options that were held less than a month. Should brokerage firms even be allowed to hold customer monies anymore or should all customer funds be held by a central government-sponsored clearing firm? The last eight years between the dotcom frauds and the latest bank excesses have really given capitalism a black eye. It's in times like this that Marxist-based philosophies can flourish. by Brian T Mikes Just last night I attended a financial seminar. I knew it was going to be interesting. My first clue was the location. The seminar was hosted in a tiny restaurant in a strip mall. A bagel shop to be precise. So much for the glamour of “Wall Street.” The food was decent and the presenter was entertaining. The topic wandered a bit bouncing from the market, to insurance, to REITs. The general question being answered was what to do now with your money. What really caught my attention however was a comment from the presenter. It wasn’t anything big or earth shattering. But he said it several times. I couldn’t get it out of my head. The comment? “Warren Buffett just bought $5 Billion Dollars worth of Goldman Sachs today!” Maybe it was the way he emphasized the words $5 Billion Dollars. Maybe it was the excitement in his voice – like he had just discovered a gold mine. Maybe it was the fact he said it twice and his co-presenters said it several times as well. Or, maybe it was the Wall Street Journal running a front page story about that very topic. Whatever it was, the statement really bugged me. Look, I’m just like everyone else. Seeing a really smart investor step up and put money on the table makes you take notice. Seeing an investing giant like Warren Buffett do it is even more influential. I started thinking about Buffett. You know, more than 10 years ago he wouldn’t comment on his investments. For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! Opinião Terrorismo é uma coisa, estupidez é outra |
Os serviços secretos de Espanha andam a brincar connosco. Há uns séculos, os espanhóis levaram uns bofetões de uma profissional da indústria da panificação, e não deve passar um dia em que não pensem na vingança. Na semana passada comunicaram-nos que a Al Qaeda ameaça praticar actos terroristas em Portugal. E nós, parvos, acreditámos. Até onde chega a credulidade dos portugueses... Primeiro acreditámos no Sócrates, e agora nos espanhóis. Há que aprender a lição.
Como é evidente, só um terrorista muito estúpido é que vem exercer a profissão para cá. Com a vigilância que existe, hoje em dia, nos aeroportos, os terroristas só podem entrar no País de carro. E vir andar de carro para as nossas estradas
é das decisões mais obtusas que uma pessoa pode tomar. É verdade
que eles são suicidas, mas não exageremos. Vai uma grande diferença entre ser suicida e ser burro.
Por outro lado, os terroristas que tiverem a infeliz ideia de entrar no País terão de construir a bomba cá. Não se faz uma viagem Paquistão-Portugal com um engenho explosivo debaixo do braço. Há que ir a uma loja comprar peças. E é aqui que as chatices começam. «Esta peça, só mandando vir do estrangeiro, chefe. Daqui a duas semanas mete-se o Carnaval, por isso agora só em Março.»
Se o explosivo levar combustível, pior ainda. Eles que vejam o preço a que está a nossa gasolina, a ver se continua a apetecer-lhes rebentar coisas. É muito fácil apanhar terroristas em Portugal. São os tipos de turbante que estão nas bombas da Galp a chorar. Os que lá andam a chorar sem turbante somos nós.
E depois temos as contingências inerentes a uma actividade tão perigosa como é o fabrico de um engenho explosivo. O terrorista corre inúmeros riscos, o maior dos quais é ir parar a um hospital português. Basicamente, o sistema de saúde português oferece-lhe três hipóteses: pode morrer no caminho, pode morrer na sala de espera e pode morrer já dentro do hospital. É certo que o esperam 71 virgens no Paraíso, mas aposto que, para morrer num hospital português, o terrorista fica em lista de espera até as virgens serem septuagenárias, altura em que a virgindade perde muito do seu encanto.
Quando, finalmente, os terroristas conseguem reunir condições para construir a bomba, o prédio que tinham planeado mandar pelos ares já explodiu há dois meses, ou por mau funcionamento da canalização do gás, ou porque o esquentador de quatro ou cinco condóminos está instalado na casa de banho. Portugal pode ser um bom destino turístico, mas para fazer terrorismo não tem condições nenhumas

Não fora ser crítico do projecto TGV e conhecer a realidade económica e social desses países,
daria comigo a pensar que os nórdicos, emblemas únicos dos superavites orçamentais, seriam mesmo uns tontos.
Se não os conhecesse bem perguntaria onde gastam eles os abundantes recursos resultantes da substantiva criação de riqueza .
A resposta está na excelência das suas escolas, na qualidade do seu Ensino Superior, nos seus museus e escolas de arte,
nas creches e jardins-de-infância em cada esquina, nas políticas pró-activas de apoio à terceira idade.
Percebe-se bem porque não construíram estádios de futebol desnecessários,
porque não constroem aeroportos em cima de pântanos, nem optam por ter
comboios supersónicos que só agradam a meia dúzia de multinacionais .
O TGV é um transporte adaptado a países de dimensão continental, extensos, onde o comboio rápido é,
numa perspectiva de tempo de viagem/custo por passageiro, competitivo com o transporte aéreo.
É por isso, para além da já referida pressão de certos grupos que fornecem essas tecnologias,
que existe TGV em França ou Espanha (com pequenas extensões a países vizinhos). É por razões de sensatez que não o
encontramos na Noruega, na Suécia, na Holanda e em muitos outros países ricos.
Tirar 20 ou 30 minutos ao Lisboa-Porto à custa de um investimento de cerca de 7,5 mil milhões de euros
não trará qualquer benefício à economia do País.
Para além de que, dado hoje ser um projecto praticamente não financiado pela União Europeia, ser um presente
envenenado para várias gerações de portugueses que, com mais ou menos engenharia financeira, o vão ter de pagar.
Com 7,5 mil milhões de euros podem construir-se:
mil escolas Básicas e Secundárias de primeiríssimo mundo que substituam as
mais de cinco mil obsoletas e subdimensionadas existentes (a 2,5 milhões
de euros cada uma), mais mil creches inexistentes (a 1 milhão de
euros cada uma), mais mil centros de dia para os
nossos idosos (a 1 milhão de euros cada um).
Ainda sobrariam cerca de 3,5 mil milhões de euros para aplicar em muitas
outras carências, como a urgente reabilitação de toda a degradada rede
viária secundária.
